Design & Build Quality#
The Kraftform handle is the part Wera has spent the longest on, and it explains the shape better than any review can. Wera developed it with the Fraunhofer IAO Institute in the 1960s and launched it in 1968; the design splits the handle into two kinds of surface, and Wera is specific about which does what. The soft zones are the torque zones — "The easy-to-grip soft zones provide optimal contact zones for the muscles of the hand to transfer a high amount of torque" — while the hard zones are the speed zones: "The smooth hard zones move through the hand like wheels when repositioning the hand on the handle." If you have read it the other way round somewhere, that is backwards.
On size, be careful what you are reading. Wera's data sheet for 05051024001 publishes a packed size of 180 x 80 x 60 mm and a weight of 308 g — that is the pouched set, and the listing's own "Item Dimensions 7.09 x 3.15 x 2.36 inches" is the same box in inches. The listing's attribute table separately records 0.2 kg. Wera does not publish an assembled length for the driver itself, so treat any single figure you see quoted for it with suspicion. What is certain is that the whole kit lives in a belt pouch Wera includes in the box.
Key Features#
Telescoping Bayonet Blade#
The two-position telescopic blade is the signature feature. Wera describes all three of its states on one page: "When the unique telescopic blade is lowered into the handle, fast, easy screw-driving action is possible, even in the tightest spots"; "By pushing the clamping sleeve, the telescopic blade can be extended out of the handle and the compact tool becomes a full-sized screwdriver"; and "If the clamping sleeve is pushed again the telescopic blade can be taken out of the handle, and be used as a machine bit adaptor." Note that all three transitions are a push on the sleeve, not a pull.
Rapidaptor Quick-Release Chuck#
Wera's own claim for Rapidaptor is "rapid one hand bit changes, press-in auto bit lock and a secure positioning when used in power tools thanks to the free-turning sleeve" — and separately, "Lightning-fast bit change without any extra tools. One-handed operation. With fast-rotating sleeve for easy wielding of the screwdriver." Wera puts no seconds figure on it, so neither will we. The press-in auto bit lock is the part that matters day to day: it is what stops bits dropping out when you work overhead.
Integrated Bit Storage#
Wera's wording is "Six bits are conveniently integrated into a push-button opening bit magazine." Its own parts list for 05051024001 names every one of them: three 800/1 Z slotted bits at 0.6 x 4.5 x 25 mm, 1 x 5.5 x 25 mm and 1.2 x 6.5 x 25 mm, and three 851/1 Z Phillips bits at PH 1, PH 2 and PH 3 x 25 mm. The seventh piece is the driver itself — an 889/4 R Rapidaptor Universal Bit Holder, 1/4" x 100 mm — and Wera also packs a 50 x 70 mm hook-and-loop fastener strip. Since it takes standard 1/4" hex bits you can swap in Torx, hex or any specialty bit you need.
Power Tool Compatibility#
Remove the blade entirely and, in Wera's words, "It can also be removed and used as a 100 mm bit holder in the power tool." Ergonomic Kraftform Handle#
